NCAA Tournament Picks

To date we have several teams that have guaranteed their seat in the NCAA Tournament. First on that list comes from the Atlantic Sun Conference in Belmont. Belmont has won three consecutive titles making this the third trip in three years. This is a team that will probably be seated as a 15 or 16 seed and they have absolutely zero possibility to pull off a significant upset. Another no name school that will be leaving the tournament after the first round is Austin Peay. It has been 5 years since Austin Peay made it into the March Madness Tournament but come selections SUnday you can see these guys in round one probably facing off against a 2 seed team. Don't count them out because if we have another Hampton vs Iowa State match up in the making then the 15 seed with the best chance to pull it off would be The Governers of Austin Peay. Winthrop is another school making the Tournament making this four straight appearances and 8 out of the last 10 years.

In the group of maybes we have Mississippi who has have some strong wins against good teams in SEC play which will probably buy there ticket to the big dance. Syracuse, a team that made a mircale run as a 6 seed to win the tournament a few years ago, will need to do well in the Big East tournament before they can get comfortable about there position. Villanova is also sitting on the line right now. This is a team that was considered a Cinderella for many years but they have since established a good name for having a strong basketball program. The problem with both Villanova and Syracuse making a spot in the tourney is they both need to do will in the Big East Tournament. Both of them need to do well before they can secure their seat.

The teams that have secured or all but guaranteed there seat in the tournament would be North Carolina, UCLA, Oklahoma and West Virginia. North Carolina sealed their ticket after a trip to Tobacco Mile otherwise known as Cameron Stadium where they spanked the Duke Blue Devils for the ACC title. West Virgina has 22 wins this season with 11 coming out of conference play. They are a team that has been hot lately in Big East play which will play heavily into their favor. UCLA is a team that not only will be in the tournament, but has a strong chance to make it in as a 1 seed. UCLA has received some favorable calls in there last two games getting them big wins in some close ball games. Coming out of the Big 12 we have the Oklahoma Sooners who have put on some impressive shows to end the regular season including some exciting wins in Big 12 play. Last but not least we have Arizona State coming out of the Pac 10. Two wins against in state rival Airzona will keep them in the hunt but with a low RPI this is a team that may get the snub.

Some teams with an outside chance of getting in would be Oregon, Arizona and Baylor. Oregon is returning many players to the same team that made an Elight Eight run but with an 18-12 record and a poor overal performance in the Pac 10 they miay miss out on getting an invitation. Arizona is a team that may not have the best record of an NCAA Tournament but a last portion of the season they were forced to play without two of there top players. Baylor is another team with an outside chance to get in. Baylor started the season in fire making the rankings towards one of the top 10 teams in the nation. It would take the tournament committee to let in half of the teams in the Big 12 for Baylor to make the cut.
