The March Madness tournament does not have any bias towards certain conferences, unlike the football post season.  There is no strength of schedule or computer system determining the outcome.  A committee picks and seats each team and its a winner take all plat form.  There has been a strong history for certain conferences to dominate the tournament.  With out argument conferences like the Big 12, Big 10, ACC and SEC have teams that will be considered NCAA Tournament contenders.  The likes of Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and with exception to this season, Kentucky all have established names for themselves on the college hardwood.  But which conference teams will excel in the 2008 NCAA tournament?  Based on a few key factors and a variety of information this is what I have determined.

The top conference in regards to the best teams goes to the ACC.  With the likes of Duke and North Carolina the ACC takes the cake for having the strongest teams at the top end.  This makes it very likely the ACC could have half of the final four teams depending on placement in the brackets. Having a strong conference like the ACC means these two teams are find tuned and ready for action coming out of conference tournament play.

The conference placing the most teams in the tournament will probably be PAC 10. UCLA, Arizona, Oregon, USC and Washington State all have strong campaigns to make it into the tournament.  These teams coming out of the Pac 10 probably have little chance to make the final four but they have potential to me involved in some of the early upsets.  Depending on the layout of the bracket his could play even more info the favor of a spoiler team like Wisconsin. They have the opportunity to get in a path that is cleared out by early upsets of quality teams.  On the flip side if Wisconsin goes up against a team that sneaks in like USC or Ohio State they have potential to get knocked out early.

Potential spoilers could come out of the Big 10 Conference with teams like Purdue, Wisconsin and, if they make the cut, Ohio State.  The real sleeper in the Big 10 is Wisconsin.  They will probably come into the tournament seated in the 3 position which plays right into a successful run ensuring they don’t face a team like North Carolina or Duke too early.  Being placed in the bracket on the same side as Memphis would ensure an easy walk right in to the Final Four.  Both Purdue and Wisconsin are strong contenders for a championship run and I am sure many peoples brackets will be busted when their March Madness Picks lose on these two teams somewhere around the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.

All in all the 2008 March Madness Tournament has potential to be one of the most exciting in the past several years. It is always anyone’s game but this year there are plenty of teams that have a strong campaign for national champion.
