When you talk about the ACC the first team you have to look at would be the North Carolina Tarheels. This is a team that is stacked with talent year after year, and always has to be considered a contender for the ncaa tournament national championship. This is a school that has produced the likes of Michael Jordan, Vince Carter and more recently, Tyler Hansbrough. With big names coming out of this school along with a top notch coaching staff, you can be sure that the Tarheels will stay a contended in the ACC with strong recruiting power.
The Duke Blue Devils are another team that has produced some big names in basketball. To name a few we have Carlos Boozer, Grant Hill and Jayson Williams. This is another school that has to be considered one of the top teams in the nation year after year. Duke has produced several final four teams and has won three Men's Basketball national championships.
One of the next teams that occasionally is considered a contender in conference play would be the NC State Wolfpack. The Wolfpack are a team that is hit and miss. The level of consistent solid recruiting when it comes to basketball is just not there for this team to be considered a contender. They have, in more recent years, began to establish a name in college basketball, but this is definitely a school that is considered more of a football college.
Next up brings Clemson to the review table. Clemson has had no lack of big names coming through the school, but I believe there problem has been on the coaching side. They have brought in big name coaches for their ncaa football program, but unfortunately the basketball program is still suffering. Bring in a big name coach with a proven track record the the Clemson program will quickly make contender status.
The Virginia Cavaliers usually put together a solid season in ACC play. On a national level they are would not make it on the list of Final Four picks, and they should be considered more of an NIT caliber teams.
Maryland seems to have fallen back in the ACC conference after a few great years. At one point in time Maryland was the team to beat and was considered a "shoe in" for national champion status. Again, inconsistency in recruiting has cost this program the success from which they relished in a few years ago. Also some big names in the athletic department leaving the program has cost Maryland not only with their college basketball program, but in ncaa football too.
Without any real big name players coming through the Georgia Tech program on a consistent basis, I never expect big things. The Yellow Jackets did pull off a surprise championship run not long ago, but a complete lack of a solid coaching staff, to go along with a program that has always had recruiting troubles means this program probably won't see another Basketball National Championship run during the month of March for a very long time.
Another program that has a strong presence in the ACC conference is Florida State. Unfortunately for the basketball program this presence is solely from the football team. (Although they seem to be struggling in football in recent years too.) Florida State is a team that is usually under valued each year making them a great underdog to play on early in the season, but as far as a victory that doesn't come against the spread you can probably forget about it.
Boston College is a program on the rise. This is a school that has started to develop not only a strong football team, but a college basketball team that is producing several players in the NBA. Unfortunately these players do not opt to finish there college careers at Boston College making the program a little unstable. I expect to see BC have some serious contention over the next few seasons.
Virginia Tech is another team that you probably will not see on any march madness picks during the ncaa tournament. In fact, they will be lucky to make an NIT bid. This program has had a few surprise entries to the tournament but they do not have a strong program when it comes to college basketball.
You'll find the Miami Hurricanes near the bottom of the ACC conference year after year. This is a school that only cares about the football program and all the dollars are being spent to keep marquee coaching staffs with that program. As far as basketball goes, "The U" will probably not be a contender until a new athletic director is brought in.
Finally in the ACC conference we have Wake Forest. Wake recently lost their head coach which was devastating for this program. They were establishing a strong name in ACC basketball and unfortunately they will be starting from scratch. You can expect to see this program on the rise over the next several years.
